Some people think that the main purpose of schools is to turn children into good citizens and workers, rather than to benefit them as individuals. To what extent agree disagree?
There is no doubt that education is crucial in our contemporary world. With growth of importance of education the question whether the main goal of schools is to teach children how to be a good citizen or to develop them as individuals is becoming increasingly significant. From my point of view, these two aspects of education are of an equal magnitude.
To begin with, being a good citizen and diligent worker, undeniably, is one of the most desirable virtues of a modern man. Nowadays, people depend on each other as they never did before. For instance, an engineer at a nuclear plant is responsible for the power which can eliminate the whole city and cause a severe damage for the country. Likewise, those in power or people of such profession as journalists have a strong impact on the general public and they should constantly bear in mind the possibility to harm by their words and action. Thus, it is essential for people to learn how to respect the society and the members of this society.
On the other hand, personal development should not be neglected. The modern world raises complex issues, which can be solved only by ingenious individuals. For example, such walks of life as space exploration or advanced information technologies require new ways of thinking. Therefore, it is significant that children are being trained to think outside the box.
To conclude, not only do we need to turn pupils into virtuous citizens and workers, but we also need to develop them as individuals, as only combination of these two aspects of education is beneficial for the humanity on the whole.
